Outline Sequence
1. Collect materials necessary to grow your own basil. These materials include a pot, plate to drain water, basil seeds, dirt/fertilizer, perilite, hand shovel, window, water, and spray bottle.
2. Be sure the pot you have selected has proper drainage. Clean the pot with the scrubber and dish soap then place on plate for water to drain into.
3. Put dirt/fertilizer in pot and fill 3/4 full. Put Perilite in the dirt/fertilizer combination and mix well. Leave soil loose, and do not pack in.
4. Moisten the soil with the spray bottle and water enough to saturate it but not too wet.
5. Place seeds in pot about 1-2 inches apart.
6. Cover seeds with 1/4 inch of soil, do not pack the soil down.
7. Moisten seeds/dirt.
8. Set the container near a sunny window.
Helpful Hints
-don't be afraid to remove a plant if it gets too crowded.
-keep the top of the soil consistently moist but not too damp.
-keep the area clean, open, and well lit where your plant is.
-after six weeks, prune the basil by pinching off the center shoot to prevent early flowering
-you can harvest basil leaves as soon as they appear on the plant, or until desired size is reached.
-do not allow basil plants to flower, as they will grow in to a woody state
-basil leaves can be dried or frozen for later use
Specifics
We will film at Mercedes' apartment potting the plant on a table. Once all the steps are done, we will set the plant on a the window sill and there will [hopefully] be a time-lapse of the plant beginning to grow. After the time lapse the plant will be completely grown and a person will grab some basil leaves to cook spaghetti with. Graphic elements will be used as tools to explain the further details within the video.
