semiotics

The topic I decided to go with for the semiotics project is student aid advocacy. To bring awareness about the problems in the education systems. The motive is to promote funding for schools and student scholarships. The concepts are: student stress, fee over-load / debt, rewriting education, student drop out and tuition price rising.

  1. michael, your presentation here is excellent. very nice looking images. you're already getting into connotation with the chalky line quality and the green background, both of which definitely speak to a school setting, even if it's a bit antiquated by today's standards.

your rendering is quite consistent and you have some strong ideas, which i'll address in a bit. plus you did five signifiers, which is great. thanks for the extra work. visually, the dropout seems the most different, because the scale within that space seems too small. but let's address the concepts. but overall, the rendering is very nice, so don't lose that.

    student stress
the pencil idea is good as an index of frustration, but i wonder if something like those moneybags on the shoulders of the person is more clear in describing what is causing the stress. the little sweat drops help express that stress a lot. not sure on which is better. right now i think the dude with moneybags is more clear.

    help student aid
this one is great. i love the combination of signs to show money going into books. i don't know that i would get anything more specific out of it than what i just said, but maybe that's okay. i don't know if your written description is any more clear than the image you made for it.

    student dropout
this is funny in a sad way. good concept but work on the scale issue. can you make him larger in the space? also his thumb is on backwards. ouch.

    re-writing education
great! love the idea of drawing the book. i wonder if it should be drawing something new, rather than a traditional book? not sure...

    rising tuition
i see "education costs money" but this is not "rising". it's not a big price tag or anything. show me more. in one sketch, you show a grad with a huge check. that scale tells me the cost is huge. but your little tag doesn't show that. yet.

    1. Thanks for the feedback! All of the things you pointed out helped a lot and I can agree with. I did not realize the thumb issue until now. I will continue to work on that and play more with the re- writing education concept. I was having trouble trying to capture the feeling of price rising but I will continue to draw more icons.
