Student Aid Advocacy is what these icons represent. Together the symbols show the problem, what it causes, what we need and what we need to do. The chalk textured strokes hints to the relation of a educational look. Re-writing Education is a icon because it is represented in its true form. Tuition Price Rising is and index because it hints to the meaning of the signifier. Student stress is a symbol because this representation of student stress would have to be learned to understand what the meaning is. Help to student aid is a index because it is not the meaning in its true form but the meaning can be implied.
michael, your overall formal approach looks really good. the drawing quality is accurate and recognizable, line weights have a good hierarchy from thick to thin and are consistently applied from image to image. these are conceptually quite strong as well. good combinations of signifiers to make up more complex ideas (money+book as a bank, balloon+money+diploma, pencil drawing a book). you hit on the chalkboard connotation right off, and it's clear and appropriate. i would challenge your "student stress=symbol" a bit, by saying that if a pencil is snapped, i can probably figure out that someone is stressed. but it could also mean other things, so it's debatable. it looks like you have a pretty decent grasp on the definition of each sign category. nice work overall!
