Terms

Semiotics - Understanding how things are communicated. Then communicating the subject through signage and symbols.

Sign - A visual notification that represents an object or concept.

Signifier - The given representation of the object or concept.

Signified - The object or concept that is being represented.

Icon - The object or concept represented as its recognizable form.

Index - A reference to the object or concept.

Symbol - Helpful learned representations of the object or concept.

Syntagm - When words are represented in a linear line.

Paradigm - When a representation is switched out, and those choices are what make up a paradigm.

Code - An agreed upon set of representations that consist of signs that a culture understands.

Polysemy - examples that exist for a word or phrase.
